- Saat ustası maceraperest bir babanın oğlu olarak dünyaya gelen Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712 Cenevre – 1778 Paris), 18. yüzyıl Avrupası’nda emekçi sınıfa mensup yoksul bir çocuğun, toplumun sınırlarını zorlayan özgün bir düşünüre dönüşmesinin simgesidir. Küçük yaşlardan itibaren yaratıcı ruhunun etkisiyle toplum ve düzenle uyum sağlayamamış, 16 yaşında evini terk ederek başına buyruk yaşamış, düzenli eğitim almamış ve çok sınırlı süreler dışında düzenli bir işte çalışmamıştır. Okuduğu kitaplardan ve gezgin hayatı sırasında toplumun her kesiminden tanıdığı insanlarla yaşadığı tecrübelerden edindiği birikimle kendi kendini eğitmeyi başararak fırtınalı ruhuna huzur sunmak için otuzlu yaşlarında yazmaya yönelmiştir.Ancak yazmak bile Fransız Devrimi’ne doğru giden bir süreçte artık iyice yozlaşmış aristokratik davranış ve düşünce kalıplarının egemen olduğu toplumsal yapıdan ve ilişkilerden bunalan bu asi dehaya ilaç olmamıştır. Mevcut kültürün aldığı yolu tartışan ve eleştiren, öğretisini insanın doğal özüne uygun ve bu özü bozmayacak, tam tersi geliştirecek sağlıklı ve adil bir yeni kültür anlayışı üzerine kuran Rousseau, düşüncesiyle yaşayışı arasında en çok benzerlik olan özgün filozoflardan biri olarak dinsel ve siyasi egemenlerin baskısına uğramıştır.Bu baskılardan bunalsa ve hassas ruhsal dengesini giderek yitirmeye başlasa da fikirlerinden taviz vermemiş, özellikle Toplum Sözleşmesi ile özgürlük, eşitlik, kardeşlik arayışının ışığı ve Fransız Devrimi’nin esin kaynağı olmuştur. Gücünü doğadan alan yaratıcı düşünceleriyle 19. yüzyıl felsefesine, özellikle de romantizm akımına ilham vermiştir.Devrimci bir yaklaşımla çocuk eğitimi üzerine yazdığı Emile, çocukluk çağlarının insan oluşumundaki önemini belirlediği ve üst sınıftan bir kadının sözleriyle, “annelere, bebeklerini emzirmeyi öğrettiği” için, büyük etki sahibidir.
