What is the 90160 Proportional Trailer Brake Controller?

The 90160 Proportional Trailer Brake Controller is an advanced device designed to enhance braking efficiency in trailers ranging from 1 to 3 axles. This controller automatically adjusts the braking force based on the deceleration of your vehicle, offering a smoother and more controlled braking experience. Many users find it's especially beneficial when towing heavier loads or navigating hilly terrain, ensuring safety and dynamic response by synchronizing the trailer’s braking with the tow vehicle.

How does the proportional braking function work?

The proportional function of the 90160 Brake Controller works by sensing the deceleration of the tow vehicle and applying brake force accordingly. This real-time adjustment means that as you press the brake pedal, the controller increases brake pressure to the trailer, leading to more effective stopping. It is particularly useful in emergency situations or on steep descents where fine control over braking is crucial, allowing you to maintain stability and prevent jackknifing.

Is the installation of the 90160 Proportional Trailer Brake Controller difficult?

Installation of the 90160 Brake Controller is designed to be user-friendly and comes with comprehensive instructions. Most users report that they can install it in a couple of hours using basic tools. By connecting it to the brake system of the vehicle and the trailer connections, you ensure efficient operation. For those unfamiliar with electrical installations, consulting a professional might offer peace of mind and guarantee proper functioning.

What types of trailers can I use the 90160 Brake Controller with?

The 90160 Proportional Trailer Brake Controller is suitable for use with a variety of trailers, including those with 1 to 3 axles. This adaptability makes it an excellent choice for everything from small utility trailers to larger RVs or boat trailers. The advanced proportional braking ensures that no matter the load or trailer type, you can achieve a safer towing experience.

Can I adjust the sensitivity of the 90160 Brake Controller?

Yes, the 90160 Brake Controller features adjustable settings that allow users to customize the sensitivity levels according to their specific needs and comfort. This means you can tailor the response from the trailer based on the load or driving conditions, providing a personalized towing experience. For instance, when towing a lighter load, you might want a more sensitive setting to ensure quick stopping, while a heavier load may require a less sensitive configuration.

Does the 90160 require a specific electrical setup?

The 90160 Proportional Brake Controller does require a 12V electrical system to function correctly. Most modern towing vehicles have compatible wiring, but checking your vehicle's specifications beforehand is advisable. To connect, you may need a wiring harness specific to your vehicle model, which can enhance the installation process and ensure optimal operation while using the trailer.

What benefits does the proportional feature provide compared to time-delayed controllers?

The key benefit of the proportional feature in the 90160 Brake Controller over time-delayed models is its real-time responsiveness to braking conditions. While time-delayed controllers take a preset amount of time to engage the trailer brakes regardless of vehicle speed or deceleration, proportional controllers adjust immediately, leading to smoother and safer stops. This allows for a more natural driving experience, reducing the risk of accidents when towing.

What should I do if my 90160 Brake Controller malfunctions?

In the event of a malfunction, first check the installation for any loose connections or wiring issues. Ensure that the vehicle and trailer connections are secure. If problems persist, consulting the user manual for troubleshooting tips can be helpful. Many users have found customer support through the manufacturer useful, as they can guide you to diagnose the issue or provide solutions to common problems.

How can I maintain the 90160 Brake Controller?

Maintaining the 90160 Proportional Brake Controller involves regular checks of its connections and wiring to ensure there are no frays or damages. Keep the unit clean and free from debris, and test the brake function periodically to confirm it’s operating properly. Regular maintenance extends the lifespan of the controller and guarantees reliable performance when towing, enabling you to stay safe on the road.
